Job Description 

Housekeeping/Laundry/Janitor (Casual) – Extendicare Michener Hill, Red Deer

Candidates are invited to apply for the position of Housekeeping Aide in our 220-beds Long Term and 60-beds supportive living facility Extendicare Michener Hill, located in Red Deer, Alberta. 

Reporting to the Environmental Services Manager, the Housekeeping/Laundry/Janitor staff maintains high standards of cleanliness and sanitation throughout the home by cleaning and sanitizing rooms and furnishings in assigned work areas following established policies and procedures. Ensure residents’ safety by following established policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receives assignments from Supervisor.
  • Using specified cleaning/disinfecting/sanitizing agents, and following specific procedures, work patterns, and routines, performs tasks such as; vacuuming, sweeping, dry/wet mopping, scrubbing, sanitizing/disinfecting floors, spot cleaning walls, windows and doors between washing, dusting, emptying waste baskets and rearranging furniture; removing waste, daily cleaning and disinfecting all resident areas; cleaning floors, fixtures, and furnishings in rooms, kitchen, closets; garbage collection, removing and recycling; may also include heavy cleaning duties such as deep cleaning. Processing all aspects of commercial laundry.
  • Ensures privacy of residents during performance and daily duties.
  • Adheres to established company policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, fire, and safety.
  • Participates in department meetings, attends in service, completes required education programs.
  • Cooperates with other departments moving and storing supplies, furniture, and equipment.
  • Successful candidate will be trained in housekeeping, laundry and janitorial duties.
  • Shift Work; must be available to work: days, weekends, and evenings. 

ABILITY TO:

  • Read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Has demonstrated a mechanical aptitude
  • Physically able to perform required duties
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within the team (effective teamwork is produced when all the individuals involved harmonize their contributions and work towards a common goal).
  • Is aware of environmentally safe work procedures and able to work safely, following established safety practices and procedures in compliance with applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation and company policy.
  • Extensive knowledge in the areas of infection control, chemical use, cleaning procedures and operation of various cleaning machines.
  • Be an active listener who projects a friendly, problem-solving approach and demeanor.
  • Superb organizing, planning, prioritizing, time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Proven integrity through open and honest interactions with co-workers to encourage active participation and commitment from others in the pursuit of common goals; understanding roles, set expectations, share information, and build positive morale.
  • Proven experience in taking personal responsibility for seeking information from various sources enables others’ learning through sharing experiences, coaching, and mentoring.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Relevant experience in maintaining building standards of cleanliness with disinfecting of furniture, surfaces, and the environment as directed by Extendicare policy, Infection Prevention and Control best practices, and Public Health Directives within the standards of the Accommodation Standards
  • Previous cleaning experience and use of various floor care machines is preferred.
  • Has a solid understanding of the Health and Safety Act
  • Must achieve exceptional attendance and be on time for each shift
  • Vulnerable Sector check required
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting, reaching, squatting, kneeling, crouching, and moving equipment, and climbing ladders.
  • Previous experience and/or knowledge of cleaning/disinfecting/sanitizing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely, following established safety practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak English and understand moderately complex oral and written instructions
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with residents, families, general public and management
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated positive attitude & strong work ethic
  • Able to lift a minimum of 50lbs
